If you are new to web building and development, choosing your first hosting service can be intimidating. The process of choosing a host company for your website, especially when you are new, can seem far too complicated. There are almost too many options to choose from! How will you decide which one is best? You will be glad to learn that there are plenty of hints that you can use to narrow down your choices.

Choosing a company to host your new website is no more difficult than choosing a service provider in other areas of your life. Choosing things to purchase doesn’t change. Use these questions to narrow down your choices.

What kind of e-mail needs do you have? If you plan on doing e-mail marketing, you will need hosting that offers you services like automatic responders and list building options. Many webmasters believe in rewarding contributors with easily accessible, personalized and project specific e-mail addresses so it is a good idea to make sure your hosting service can do this. This usually means offering dozens of individualized e-mail addresses for each person that helps you with your project. Check out the e-mail options for each hosting company you are thinking of using to make sure that each company meets your requirements. Ask as many questions as you can think of. You need to make actual contact with every one of the companies that you might choose for your hosting. Speak with a human customer service agent. If you are not able to talk to a real person, don’t choose that company! Do not share any information with a company that will not allow you to have a conversation with a live person who represents that company. If one of your hosting companies cannot prove that they have actual live employees (and not just question and answer bots) they are most likely trying to scam you out of your money. Even small companies should have at least one person you can talk to. Be wary of any company without live representatives!

Check out the day to day business practices of the company. Bigger hosting operations will be listed with their local business registries. Find out where the company’s headquarters are located and make sure that the company is listed in the business bureaus of that city and state. Do a search through the better business bureau. If a company has received a bunch of infractions or complaints against it you should move on to the next option on your list. It is a good idea to avoid any company that has not been registered with the city and state authorities. Even independent contractors are required to register with their localities. Be wary of any company whose operations cannot be legally verified.

When you decide to build your own space on the web there are lots of things you can do to make sure you find the best hosting provider available. The best way to avoid paying too much for the plan you want is to do your research and plan out your project before you start shopping for hosting. Looking over your options and asking every question that you can think of is a great idea. Being thorough will make it easier to be happy with your final decision.
